Gravel works threat threat lifted from Fareham sites Print E-mail

HAMPSHIRE County Council has now decided against sand and gravel extraction, from the eastern part of the Daedalus site, near Broom Way, and the Brownwich and Chilling farms, west of the River Meon.

The Daedalus site had the potential to yield up to 900,000 tonnes of sharp sand and gravel.

It would have had worrying implications for our communities in Stubbington and Hill Head - 900,000 tonnes of gravel could entail thousands of lorry movements on our already congested roads.

The Chilling area was potentially an even bigger site, with potential for extraction of up to 8 million tonnes.

It is one of the last unspoilt stretches of coastline on The Solent, with numerous sites of special scientific interest and special landscape character, and is a significant habitat for numerous wetland species.

Anyone who has enjoyed walking in this glorious piece of countryside will be relieved its character will be safeguarded.

A site at Hamble is stil being considered for gravel extraction, and we will keep an eye on the implications for traffic in the west of Fareham
