| 101 - an ill-considered cut |

COMMUNITY safety officers are having a good effect in curbing problems such as under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour - but the Government is about to make their job more difficult. We hope the ACSOs and PCSOs can further assist in policing Fareham by taking up issues like litter louts and graffiti. Action on minor issues like these can help prevent youngsters drifting into seriously bad behaviour. However, the future of the 101 phone line intended for reporting such issues was under threat after the Government withdrew its funding. This short-sighted thinking undermines attempts to involve members of the public in looking after their communities, and we are glad local authorities in our area have found a way to safeguard the service at least temporarily.
