Fareham Borough Council's planning committee approved proposals for a new 70,000 sq ft Tesco on the old foundry site in Fareham town centre by five votes to three. The vote was split along party lines with the Tories voting for and the Lib Dems voting against it. Liberal Democrats on the committee voiced fears about the store's impact on town centre parking - the 440 staff will not be able to use the store's car park. They also felt the store was too big for the available land, and were not convinced that changes in road layout to minimise its impact on the congested Quay Street roundabout would work. And there were fears that pedestrian access would be inadequate and unsafe. Liberal Democrats wil continue to monitor this project as details emerge.
